I was so excited to recently discover a Black-owned wine shop on Instagram during one of my daily scrolls. After months of following them online, I finally made it out to check out their store, and I’m so glad I did.
Purple Corkscrew is a very cute and very comfy shop located in Avondale Estates, just east of Decatur, Georgia. As soon as you enter, you are warmly greeted by the friendly staff at the desk. Patrons may enjoy their wine in one of two ways: 1) purchase bottles of wine to go; or 2) enjoy one of the preselected bottles on site in the tasting room or on the patio. Because the weather was less than cooperative during my first visit, my best friend and I sat in some very comfortable chairs and enjoyed our bottle of rosé in the tasting room. I felt like a real-life adult. It was like a moment out of a Girlfriends episode.
The shop also makes their space available for use to host private events with a range of menus from a reception menu of grapes, cheese and charcuterie to a grand cru menu with seated service and a sommelier.
The staff were so friendly and so willing to find ways to connect. We enjoyed a great conversation that felt organic and authentic. This became even more evident when I attended an event they hosted with one of the owners of Brown Estate, a Black-owned wine label carried by Purple Corkscrew. The attendees were so comfortable with the owner and staff, and the conversation flowed so easily. It was a beautiful thing to be a part of.
One of the things I really like about Purple Corkscrew is that you don’t have to be a sommelier to be comfortable in this space. I know very little about wines—I know what I like, but I probably could not tell you all the tasting notes or anything like that. Even so, I felt like I was in a space that was created for someone like me. The staff is very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions you might have. But Purple Corkscrew is also a space that a more experienced or knowledgeable wine drinker could enjoy as well, and I think that is a really cool thing.
There are a variety of wine labels available for purchase at Purple Corkscrew. Some of your favorite Black-owned wines––which are very popular and sell out quickly––as well as a variety of others. The wines vary across palettes and price points, and I’m sure you will be able to find something to fit your needs.
Overall, Purple Corkscrew is about to be my go-to place to sip on the patio and buy wine moving forward.
