I discovered this Black-owned dessert shop in 2018 during Soundbites—Black Restaurant Week’s Black Food Truck Festival. It was the best thing I ate that day and each trip since has kept me thoroughly satisfied.
Atmosphere:
Since my first visit to their truck, Not As Famous Cookie Company has opened a brick and mortar store in Smyrna and walking in feels like you have stepped into a freshly baked cookie. The shop itself is spacious with the counter, where you order, and a bar with chairs running the length of the shop. The delicious smells of the cookie flavors of the week—which are baked in-house—engulfs you as soon as you walk in the door and you really can’t help but to smile (and probably buy more cookies than you were anticipating).
Food and Beverages:
Not As Famous Cookies rotates its cookie flavors monthly, and, honestly, I haven’t had one that I haven’t loved. They have all of the classics like chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, sugar, and more. They also have some more creative flavors like s’mores, birthday cake, cranberry oatmeal, Mississippi mud, or pumpkin snickerdoodle. Some flavors keep it simple (think red velvet or cookie butter) while others are much more intricate (like salted caramel chocolate chip with pretzel or cranberry macadamia nut with white chocolate chips). They even make special ones for holidays (like Valentine’s Day sugar or green velvet white chocolate chip). Every flavor that I have chosen has been soft baked, with a little crunch on the edge—the perfect way to bake a cookie, in my opinion.
If cookies aren’t really your style, Not As Famous Cookies also has ice cream—which, much like their cookies, does not disappoint. As with the cookies, there are classic flavors like vanilla and mint chocolate chip then there are more adventurous flavors like smoky mountain fudge—which is my favorite—and strawberry cheesecake. It’s all creamy and delicious and you can also make shakes and floats.
If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, you’re in luck. The very first thing that I had from Not As Famous Cookies was a deep dish cookie with ice cream. I opted for the snickerdoodle, topped with smoky mountain fudge ice cream, drizzled with chocolate, caramel, and sprinkles. The cookie was warm and soft, as if it just came out of the oven, and it provided the perfect bowl to the melting ice cream, which was also quite delicious. You can also combine the cookies and ice cream as an ice cream sandwich. Either way you choose, it’s a win.
Price:
Individual cookies start at $3 (although I’m not sure why you would buy just one). An order of three is $7.50. You can also order a half dozen or a dozen for $13 and $22, respectively.
You can get a scoop or two for $4 or $6, which is the same price as the float. For an additional $2, you can get a shake.
An ice cream sandwich is $8 and a deep dish cookie is $9.
Service:
The staff is always super friendly and nice, even under the stress of long food truck lines. The wait is always worth it.
Overall:
I have a very sweet tooth, so I could eat one or more of these sweet treats every day. But I will be a responsible adult and reserve them as special treats. And I’m confident they will make me do my happy dance every single time.
Happy buying!
